Flick, thanks for responding. While it is good to know that there are some active militia out there, there still remain a lot of gun owners (and would-be gun owners) who are potential militia members. It will take a much bigger showing to get government to pay attention. We need to do a better job getting the word out -- as well as dispelling the notion that we are just a bunch of nut cases.

Good post. Actually, what you call for has already been done and is being done. Most gun owners seem to think that the Second Amendment reads: "Owning guns and writing letters to your representatives being necessary to the security of a free state,..." And as you point out, it's not just a militia that's necessary to the security of a free state, it's a well regulated militia. In 18th century parlance, that means well trained and equipped.

The states have an obligation to maintain their militias, yet today not one does. So what's a people desiring to maintain liberty to do? Well, do we or do we not have government of, for, and by the people? If so, then the obligation of maintaining militias falls to We the People.

We've all heard that with rights come responsibilities. We all know that with the right to free speech comes the responsibility not to slander or yell "fire" in a crowded theater. But what is the responsibility that comes with the right to keep and bear arms? It's stated in the opening clause of the Second Amendment: A well regulated militia. Part of our civic responsibility in preserving liberty and just governance is to join the militia.

For any who would like to take seriously their Second Amendment responsibility, I invite you to check out today's militia movement at http://www.awrm.org or at my own site (click on my name). Don't make excuses about what you've heard the mainstream media say about the militia--how would you know unless you make contact with a militia unit personally (something the MSM doesn't seem interested in doing)? Make contact and ask the hard questions: "Are you racists? Are you bent on overthrowing the U.S. government? Do you engage in illegal activities? Are you warmongers?" Then join up. It's a heck of a lot more fun, interesting, and rewarding than watching football and sitcoms.

Peace,
